Gourmet Food Distributors is a local, family owned and operated business. Starting from humble beginnings back in 1955, Alex Kahn and his family distributed small goods from a warehouse located at the back of their family home in Chinchen Street Islington. At the time the business went by the name of Alex Wholesale and Delicatessen and supplied delicatessens in Hamilton and its surrounding suburbs. It was operated by the Kahn family for over 20 years until 1977 when Alex retired.
The business was then purchased by the Robson family who operated for 2 years before selling to Noel Langbein in 1978. The business continued from its initial location in Chinchen Street Islington and under its original name for a further 10 years with the Langbien family.
In 1988 WA Grubb & Co purchased Alex Wholesale and Delicatessen. After only 3 short years the business came back into the hands of the Langbein’s who aquired Continental Food Group and in 1991 Gourmet Food Distributors was born. Noel moved the business from the back streets of Islington to new larger premises at Robert Street Wickham and expanded his customer base to include Newcastle’s emerging restaurant market.
The Langbien’s continued to grow Gourmet Food Distributors over the next 20 years. They expanded their suppliers to include the best local producers and formed relationships with international importers gaining access to new produce and products.
In 2011 Noel Langbien’s son Peter took over the business with his close friend Adam. During Peter and Adam’s management Gourmet Food Distributors moved from Robert Street Wickham to its current home in Darling Street Carrington. Under the guidance of Noel, Peter and Adam continued to build a thriving business.
In 2016 Gourmet Food Distributors was purchased by its present owners the Christensen Family. James Christensen is a qualified Chef who has been cooking throughout Australia, the United Kingdom and France for over 20 years. He has traveled extensively in Europe, the Middle East and Africa experiencing first hand the diversity of flavours and cooking methods these regions offer. This experience fuels his passion for locating unique and hard to find ingredients and sourcing premium products today. After returning from overseas in 2009 James expanded his skills and knowledge in the food wholesale and distribution industry while still keeping “one hand on the pans” in Newcastle and Hunter’s premier restaurants.
Kate is a hospitality professional who like James developed a love of quality artisan produce while living overseas. She has spent the last 8 years working the Insurance and Finance Industry and brings her exceptional customer service and administration knowledge to Gourmet Food Distributors. Both James and Kate are dedicated to providing the best quality products to their customers while remaining true to the principles of honesty and integrity that have been part of the business since the days of Alex Kahn.
